‘If you go to one demonstration and then go home, that’s something, but the people in power can live with that. What they can’t live with is sustained pressure that keeps building, organisations that keep doing things, people that keep learning lessons from the last time and doing it better the next time.’

HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO WATCH EARTHLINGS

You want people to make the connection and here’s where you can see that firsthand. This cuts out the middle man of a leaflet that tells people to watch Earthlings and where instead of you approaching people, they approach you. Quite possibly the easiest form of activism and something that every activist should experience doing. Something that you can do any time, any place with just two people.

01.

You will need Earthlings on your laptop or a documentary of your choice to make a difference. If you want more people to join you, you can set up a page and an online event and invite friends and local animal rights groups to join you. You can also send it to us, and we will share it for you. But you can also just do this with a friend.

02.

A mask (pref neutral). We recommend these masks. This is to attract attention to you so that people will see what you are showing and to remain anonymous so that you are representing any member of society, furthermore to keep Earthlings the focus by not speaking to encourage the viewer to investigate and reflect on their own reactions alone. You can also do this without a mask if you prefer.

Watch to see why we're here

03.

Any public space where you can draw on the idea of a shared experience and where intimacy can bring about connections and can crowds can draw further awareness. Do this in a busy place and you will draw many.

04.

Optional: A disclaimer, a label in clear bold writing somewhere on the laptop to say ‘WARNING: this footage contains graphic content. Footage taken from Earthlings.com. Thanks for watching’.

a mask and a tablet

05.

A memo on a card/piece of paper/however you like… saying a short quote or message and where to find more info/resources to help them, that you give to someone when they are about to go and have made some sort of connection watching the video or talking with someone.

Handing out leaflets

06.

Doing this in pairs is a good way to start with 1 person holding the laptop and 1 person holding a disclaimer/ sign saying ‘watch the video to see why we are here’ as an example but the sign can say anything that encourages someone to watch the video or question the exploitation of animals. If there are more of you then you can also pretend to be other people watching the footage to encourage people to watch or take photos or videos and share online. In an outdoor space if there are enough of you, there can also be people talking with the public about what they are watching and answering questions.

07.

Show the truth. In Earthlings, starting fifteen mins in under the heading ‘food’ is the perfect start we find. But you can show any video/documentary of your choice.

If you consume..

08.

Stay connected with who is watching and their responses to see them make the connections you want them to, this is inspiring work for an activist, and you’ll want to know when they’re about to go to give them a memo. If no-one is watching, then pick up on that and move to where somebody else will. This is on-the-go activism.

We must not refuse to see with our eyes

09.

If you want to talk to people then you do not have to be the person holding the laptop or the sign, and you can swap around at any point. Without a mask on, you could also be the person noticing and helping a stranger willing to watch in finding the right moment to start up a conversation with something like ‘Have you ever seen anything like this before?’ and giving them more information.

10.

Enjoy the experience in being the change for yourself and so many others in planting the seed. Upload your experiences of this onto this page from all over the world. And reach out to us if you would like us to add your city to the ever-growing list of cities creating these actions, so others can find and join you.
